10 Ways to Embellish Your Wedding Invitations

Category: All About Wedding Invitations | Published on: Feb 03, 2017

A few years ago, I did a post about some ways to embellish your wedding stationery. Since then, I discovered other ways to embellish those invites, so here’s my revised top ten!

Invitations are more than a design simply printed on paper. Paper is the foundation, but there’s so much more you can do with invitations. Create something original by swapping out elements, changing elements, or adding elements. Here are ten of my favorite ways to embellish your stationery, in no particular order. Because how can I pick just one!

  1. Patterned Belly Band

Belly bands are beautiful and functional. They keep your invitation inserts organized, while you get some extra real estate to add even more of your own flair. Dress up a belly band with a pattern or motif from the rest of the suite.

This belly band matches the Lilac suite.

  2. Reverse Pattern

A belly band isn’t the only place you can repeat your wedding motif. Use up that empty space on the back!

  3. Mixing Paper Colors

It doesn’t get more basic than choosing a different paper for your invitations. Although it’s not strictly an embellishment, different colored paper really gives a whole different look to the same design.

Remember you’re not restricted to just white, or ivory. There’s a whole rainbow of choices out there!

  4. Ribbon

Ribbon can be added as an embellishment in several ways: taped, tied, wrapped, etc… This purple satin ribbon wraps around to hold the pocket closed.

  5. Flat Back, Button, or Buckle

That ribbon isn’t alone. It’s kept company by a shiny rhinestone snowflake. Embellishments come in all sorts of finishes, materials, and shapes—from laser cut wood shapes to encrusted starfish.

  6. Envelope Liner

Surprise your guests as soon as they open your invitation envelope. Add an envelope liner in a solid color, pattern, or even a custom design. This bright turquoise envelope liner is a nice contrast with the cream outside.

Plus, envelope liners add stability to the envelope which can help them get through the Post Office with minimal damage.

  7. Belly Band with Tag

For a variation on the belly band, add a tag—a smaller card with a logo or saying on it. Create extra dimension this way by adding in additional layers, or use foam squares for a floating effect.

If you’re using a monogram throughout your wedding design, include it on a tag.

  8. Layering or Matting

I’m such a fan of embossed papers. This Laurel wedding invitation with textured woodgrain paper creates great contrast with the smooth cream paper, and the texture adds a rustic touch. Plus, the double thickness adds stability and a sense of luxury.

  9. A Pocketfold

Pocket wedding invitations are a great way to jazz up your stationery without a huge expense. This peony wedding invitation is mounted in a gold pocket | Wedding Invitations by CharmCat Stationery & Design

As a neurotically organized person, I love how the pocketfold keeps all the pieces together in one neat package. You can get pocketfolds in all sorts of colors, sizes, and even pockets with laser cut patterns.

This Peony wedding invitation looks extra classy in a gold pocketfold.

  10. Decorative Edges

Who says you have to accept square edges? Not me! It’s easy to give your invitations round corners, but you can also choose some more intricate die cut corner options like tickets or swirls.

Which is your favorite? Do you have another favorite way to embellish your invitations?
