A Vivid, Playful Watercolor Invitation
Category: Portfolio | Published on: Feb 11, 2015
What do you get when you combine bold painting, bright colors, and a lot of fun? This invitation set!
Overall, this project took about eight months, three reprints, and more than one late night. Getting the colors as vivid as possible was an important part of the overall look — we went through three different color arrangements before settling on this one, printed using spot color in order to get the purest pigments on the paper.
The Invitation Suite
Every piece in the suite featured a reverse print — watercolor strokes that created the pattern of two hearts. The hearts were also mirrored in the reception card.
Each item featured a different color, with one other accent color that tied the suite together. The three fonts were chosen to compliment the fun feel of the color palette.
The Day Of Stationery
Part two of the suite is the “day of” stationery. We designed menus, signage, program cards, and a seating chart.
Staying consistent with the invitations, the menus featured fun hand-painted watercolor designs in a bright spot-printed blue.
Each guest was greeted with one of these fun inserts inviting them to use the photobooth. The Bible verses at the top were different for each table and were chosen by the bride and groom.
Guests found their way to tables by way of a custom seating chart we had printed and framed. The seating chart featured all three colors in splashes around the edge to match the other pieces.
How was it made?
A lot of painting.
Using watercolor and acrylics, I painted pages and pages of “random” watercolor splotches, photographed the best ones, and mix-and-matched them in Photoshop. Because of the high-quality photos, you can still see the brush strokes in the final printed design.
We had the invitations printed on cotton paper and the signs printed on canvas to really gave the feel of each piece having been painted!
